HU's Newest Faculty: The Art of Mathematics

Prof. Tamar Ziegler Prof. Tamar Ziegler joined the Hebrew University's Einstein Institute of Mathematics in July 2013 after spending five years in postdoctoral fellowships in the United States at Ohio State University, Princeton, and University of Michigan followed by a faculty position at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology after her return to Israel in 2007. Prof. Ziegler compares mathematics to art, saying that it is "like looking at a beautiful picture and then trying to really understand it".

Prof. Ziegler looks back to the Greek mathematicians in her research of Number Theory, the oldest branch of pure mathematics, and its connections to Ergodic Theory. Prof. Ziegler has used Ergodic Theory, the study of long term behavior of dynamical systems, to make fantastic advancements in understanding prime numbers which are the focus of Number Theory.
